About

Leanne's practice spans 30 years, promoting creativity through community art projects and varied facets of the art & design industry while maintaining a vibrant studio practice, and showing in more than 70 exhibitions. Over recent years, her practice has moved towards enhancing collaboration, social process and community engagement often outside of conventional art spaces.

Leanne's art practice is a direct response to the environment, stimulated by deep observation. Drawn primarily to mark-making, this energy is translated into works on paper, oil, encaustic, print, sculpture and installation.

The sustainable integrity of material choices has become a priority and she aims to produce work with natural materials, growing, harvesting or producing as much as possible from plant-based inks and fibre to wax directly from the hive. Installation works often use sound and light and are all powered by autonomous solar arrays.

Leanne Thompson is a member of Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation (KSCA), an artist collective dedicated to the idea that art is how we change culture and that anyone who creates change is therefore an artist. This concept encourages a practice of engagement with innovators outside of the traditional contexts of art making: farmers, inventors, advocates, and communities facing societal change, in an effort to contribute our skills as artists to social and cultural change occurring in the world.

I acknowledge the traditional owners of country, especially where I live and work - the Eora, Dharwal, Wiradjuri and Dabee people. I acknowledge their continuing connection to land, waters and culture and appreciate the generous spirit with which knowledge is shared to enrich. I pay respects to elders past, present and emerging.
